January is coming to an end and with it some of our resolve for attacking our New Year’s resolutions might be fading as well. Now is not the time to become complacent. After three weeks it is common for your resolution resolve to fade away so take the time to think about your health and wellness goals for 2012.
Here are some great tips adapted from SpaFinder on making your resolutions last.
“Take Small Bites”
Break up your resolution into manageable “bites”. You will never succeed if you try to completely change your diet or fitness routine all at once. Focus on small steps. Mariel Hemingway told SpaFinder to start slow. “I say to people, if they want to change the way they eat, change your breakfast – start with one thing, because it’s do-able and more often than not, if you change your breakfast, you’ll feel differently at lunch and make a healthier choice then. If you push too hard or make it so extreme and so far from your regular life, then you won’t continue it. So I always say go slow, take small bites.”
Make it FIT!
Be realistic when it comes to setting fitness goals and make sure they will fit your lifestyle. If you are often out in the evenings for mandatory work dinners or functions it is foolish to think you will go to the gym in the evenings. Instead vow to wake up an hour early three days a week and hit the gym at the start of your day. Take the time to really think about your schedule, the activities you truly enjoy and realistic time constraints. Then establish a fitness routine with the knowledge that you can actually make it work for you.
Give it Three Weeks
Change takes time so you need to be patient. You won’t become fit overnight or completely renovate your diet in a couple of days. Assume it will take at least 21 days for a new habit to be developed and it will take much longer than that to actually see the results of your new health and fitness routine. So – just relax and enjoy the journey.
